The population and economy of California continued to grow during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Agricultural production expanded and new industries appeared. The state's growth was accompanied by intense controversies over the natural resources of California and among the competing forces of labor and capital. As the new century dawned, the forces of reform gained strength and emerged triumphant.
